Shotgun or Pistol formation?

Shotgun or Pistol formation?
Recently I made a comment about QB Colin Kaepernick and the Pistol Formation that he ran at Nevada. I think this is the formation we should use even with Garrard at QB this coming year.
I have always believed that the closer to the line of scrimmage the hand off is made to the RB the more success the run will be. Like the quick opener or quick count. For  several years I have seen the Jags run for one yard after the QB goes back to the RB to hand it off. In the stands everyone knows, OK this will be for one yard.
I believe that on running plays the initial block of the OL is where you can do something, not after one or two seconds of trying to hold that block. When will we ever learn. Some things do not work and to me are a waste of a play. I hate it and we have to change and throw out plays like that no matter what they think it does for setting up something else. A play wasted is a play wasted simple as that.
Think of it the “hurry up offense” and the “no huddle” is also popular and the fans always say why not do that earlier in the game. OK maybe we can’t do it for the whole game but a modified version of it from the “pistol” maybe something we can incorporate.

I even like the Steelers version better if the QB is tall. It's closer to the line like the formation calls for 3 to 4 yards deep.

By the way I suggest that the Jags draft Colin Kaepernick in the later rounds if available. He fits the bill on big tall QB's that teams have had success with.

CONTINUITY

Continuity that is the reason to keep Tucker and Koetter. I believe that we have missed that in past years with coaches leaving or being fired. JDR has gone through too much of this and I for one want the team to stay together one more year. There is a lot to be said for continuity and if you look at some of the good teams they have keep everyone in the fold.
Gene and Jack did a great job of getting the players to be a TEAM and now maybe they can improve what they had instead of having to learn a new system from a new coach.
Listen I have many doubts about this team and I picked them to go 8 / 8 last year in June. This year I am picking them to go 9 / 7 here in Jan. I may change that again in June or July depending on the draft and training camp to 10 / 6, any record above this will be wonderful. Hopefully it will be enough to get us into the play-offs.
It's strange that I'm writing this because I have been one of JDR and his coaching staffs biggest critics.
Anyway I'm in for another year with bright spots being Special Teams. New play makers with another year of experience namely Jennings, Hill, Lewis, Alualu, Knighton, Cox and maybe Zack Miller. Oh yeah and the return of Kampman.
I could end up wrong and disappointed, but then it wasn't my decision to keep Jack anyway. All I can do is go with it and try to hope for something positive.
If they do good and get into maybe even the second round the I wouls say they may even do better the next year.
Look for an update after the draft and free agency.

AFC SOUTH NEWS

KEEP YOU HANDS OFF MY DEFENSE

Jack "What did you say?" Mel "I said keep your hands off my defense"

I'm afraid that JDR will still have too much to say on defense. Now that it is Mel's to run they should let him run it completely like he wants and listen to him on players that need to go and players that he needs. Will this happen? I have doubts about that.
Speaking of Greg Williams what really happened with him? I have suspicions that he didn't get along with Jack. It seemed to me that the year Greg was here he changed to a 3 / 4 and was good for a couple of games and then Jack stepped in and stopped it. I think that this was the end of Greg as the man. The same thing could happen to Mel, so we should watch for that. If Mel does not have the freedom then that'[s another strike against Jack.
Are the fans unaware of players ability? I think fans know just as well as the coaches who is slacking of not playing good. The fans are all surprised that Mathis has been pointed out as good player. What is Jack seeing that we don't see? We see someone that seems to be playing touch football.
Any way I say good luck to Mel too and hope the best for him the smallest amount of interference from Jack.
One more thing, since almost no one agrees with Wayne on keeping Jack, we should keep the pressure on Jack and hold him to his promises this time. I think Wayne should keep a short leash on Jack. Don’t be mistaken I can find some good in keeping Jack for another year too, but I’m ready to yank him quickly if he gives us the same kind of performance.

IT IS WHAT IT IS !

Are the Jaguars newsworthy or even relevant? It seems as if they are not if you look on NFL.com or The NFL Newark. It’s almost as if there is a conscience decision to not mention the Jags.
Today’s team news on keeping Jack Del Rio as head coach was big news here in Jacksonville and very controversial and you would think they would at least mention it. Maybe the league is upset as much as the fans and they just don’t want to give it any news time. Who knows maybe they are disappointed with the team and owner.
Anyway is makes me angry and it should make others angry too. I can remember back in the late 60’s that the Redskins never got any attention either and it upset everyone. There was a MNF game when Howard Cossell didn’t left the Skins off the half-time review. You know I was upset if I still remember that.
Anyway they won’t change because they are not really a news broadcast but a bunch of dummies that just keep repeating stories about their favorites. They sure have some Darlings like Dallas and others that they love to talk about even if they are losing.
Oh well IT IS WHAT IT IS !  The only thing that will help to get on the news is to win, win , win , win.
So Go JAGURS !

OK SO WE GO WITH JACK

OK so we stay with Jack for another year.

It may surprise a lot of you but I agree with keeping JDR for another season. The one big reason was pointed out by Wayne Weaver and that is the "culture" of the team. I give a lot of credit to Jack Del Rio and Gene Smith the GM for getting rid of some bad players who didn't buy into the vision and a lot of players who had character problems.
Together they turned around the character of this team and made them into a TEAM that believes and works together.
That is so very important and I wish them luck and I am behind them 100% this coming year. Now don't think that means I won't be critical, because I will be. Continuity is almost always good.

GOOD LUCK JACK AND GENE
WORK HARD
GO JAGUARS

FOOTBALL A BUSINESS? YES !

Can you the fans and especially the front office of the Jaguars look at this team as a "Product"? They better start doing just that if they want success.
Football is a business and it's big business. The product is the team. Ask Jerry Jones if you don't think so. He knows it is and he is an excellent salesman for his product.
How do sell a product? You advertise for one thing. I'm not just talking local billboards and TV interviews and web site information but National Media. Think of Catsup what name comes to mind? Think of any big name product and it is a household name because of the exposure in the Media.
The media that gives that exposure to a football team is ESPN, NFL NETWORK and any number of other spots networks and radio shows.
How do you get talked about on TV and Radio. You have to be news worthy and good enough for newscasters and producers to get excited about.
Just when the Jaguars get a little exciting they then proceed to fall on their face and disappoint. This has happened for two years in a row and the people who choose stories for the air stay away from us because it's like advertising a bad product.
You want the air time, advertisement time, then you have to be dependable and news worthy. There are some teams because of the market and history in the league that will always get attention and there is nothing you can do about that.
Team Teal is fine for some local action, but to be honest it is preaching to the choir. Ask an outsider, someone that does not go on line and seek out info on the Jags, and chances are he has never heard of Team Teal of the 30 / 30 plan.
Why should fans try to sell tickets? That's not their job and to think so is wrong. We're not door to door salesmen. The right product will sell it's self. Wrap it differently and to say it will improve will only be empty promises. Now getting a whole new process and machines and technological advanced procedures will help to sell the product. What would these things be in football language? New GM, Head Coach (big name), Players and even a change in the stadium or uniforms. If the product is not selling and it is not then you have to play for the attention every day. Lot's of bells and whistles to get the attention of the media and the fans.

THE PRODUCT WILL SELL TICKETS AND PUT FANS IN THE SEATS

Here's a little proof if you need convincing....let's say Green Bay decided to move to Jacksonville, Would there be any problem selling seats or getting media attention?

NEXT YEAR

Yeah I'm recovery fast from the disappointment. Up early in the am and looking for answers. Jack are you sleeping well?
I checked out the Jacksonville.com Jaguars page and they already have posted the opponents for next year. Here they are Our division foes of course at home and at their home.
Then we have Balt, Cinnci, N.O., Tampa, San Diego at home
and then away we have. Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Carolina and Jets.

Here's my take on this
On the surface this looks like an good schedule, but as we know all of these teams will be different next year and you can't judge them on this years record.
We still have to build up to beat Indy and if we can the rest of the season will take care of it's self.
It's still the same for us...be able to beat the Colts, Texans and Titans and we'll be a good team. Even if we can split in the division we will be able to handle anyone else.

WE MUST FILL IN THE GAPS THAT ARE STILL GLARING WEAKNESSES.
SAFETIES
PASS RUSH
CORNERS
QB (this is always easy to put blame here, but good players on both sides of the ball can make a QB look good and I'm not sure it's all the QB's fault) In Garrard's case 33% I can fault him for holding the ball too long and not seeing the field as well as not being able to change play other than switch to run or pass.
AND YES BOTH LINES STILL NEED TO GET BETTER
+
PLAY CALLING OFFENSE AND DEFENSE
HEART OR SPIRIT OR AN ID OF PASSION

I ALWAYS THING THAT IF THE PLAYERS LIVED AND DIED WITH THE TEAM AS THE FANS DO THEY WOULD NOT HAVE BACK TO BACK LOSSES. GETTING PAID FOR A BAD JOB OR GOOD JOB DOESN'T MAKE AN INCENTIVE.

Good luck Mr. Weaver in making decisions upcoming. It's going to take more than Marketing and Team teal to put fans in the seats this coming year.

I'll be there again for my 12th season.

TODAYS COMMENTS AS THEY HAPPEN

I couldn't believe after all I have said They won the toss and defer to receive the kick off.
Well you all see what happened there. Texans 7 points.
OK now a three and out.

Man do the Jags look terrible. It's embarrassing

Again no heart...the wrong team showed up again. How can they play this bad. NO PRIDE?
OK we are lucky. Did you notice on the run plays that the LB's and DB's just stood there? Don't they know when it's clearly a run and they should come up.  It didn't look like it to me.
Mathias should go. He might be pretty good in a touch football game.

If this is all negative then show me something to be positive about.
This for me to remember this game so I can't be soft soaped later by JDR or anyone from the Jaguars. I can go back to this blog and see what this team really did and didn't do.

OK they're running good or Jennings is, but I'm holding my breath. Sometimes success spoils them. Let's hope they can follow through and score. Well they did it. 7 pints.  Maybe JDR knows that it takes these guys at least a quarter to wake up? If that is so the Defer is OK>>>but I don't like it anyway. The team should always be ready to play..

FYI I'm going back and forth from the big screen in the LR to my Man Cave to type this. Exercise? I guess so.

Jaguars pass defense still can't stop anything.  Another 7 for Texans.  Shame shame shame. Up and down the offense woke up only to have the defense stay asleep.

17    to   7   I am still embarrassed just like earlier this year when they played without heart.

OK I'm just going to watch for awhile. I'll recap later if I don't have to go and throw up.

OK Scobe...... 17 /  10

OK Mercedes     ties up.   It's a shame we had to spot them 17 points..
NOW WAKE UP DEFENSE!

Pass defense still SUCKS !

Texans field goal           20  /17  now.  No I don't think it is great we held them to a field goal. I WANT A STOP OR A TAKE AWAY ON THE 2 MIN DRILL WHEN YOU KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO PASS.

Half Time..

down by 10 again.

I thought JDR told Mike Thomas to run up and get the ball?  We start in the hole again.
No field position for the Jags....another constant.

Another 3 and out........So it's not Garrard but the offensive line and the play calling or not recognizing the blitzes.

Well it's over now 33 / 17 is too much to come back from.  What a shame the wrong Jax team showed up this week.

I'm done too.

See you next year....I don't even want to think about it yet, but that's how it goes. Please note this is before the season even started.

Remember back earlier in the season I said June 30th of this year

LOOKING AHEAD

Here's my predictions for some players on the line.
Garrard will be traded this month.
Mathis will be traded
Durant will be traded
Harvey will be cut
Considine will be but
Morrison will return
Meester will return
Simms-Walker will return
Garrard will be traded for a safety and a 2nd round pick and a third round pick from Eagles.
Mahis will be traded to San Diego for a LB and a 4th pick
Durant will be traded to Tampa for a 6th round pick
